Wow, in all my years of snarky comments I've never had them removed from a community before.  I guess there's always a first.

Jul. 11th, 2009 @ 12:17 am Media win!
Well, here's an improvement. Apparently I should stick to what I know.

I'm in the Quincy Patriot-Ledger, on the benefits of more proactive use of Narcan™ (naloxone, a narcotic antagonist). It's not a bad article (IMO), not least because it has the message I approve of: narcan should be widely available. My bit, should you be looking for it, is towards the bottom.

(Note for recent readers: my last brush with the media didn't end up so well. I almost declined to do this one, but decided to because I thought the message was important. Of course, I thought that the last time, too :-)

Jul. 10th, 2009 @ 08:08 pm Sasktel is in the house
So I needed a new phone.  My previous phone was a cordless, but only 2.4 Ghz and it sucked ass.  It was staticy and lost range inside the apartment.  Last night was the last straw when its battery died as I was in the middle of an important conversation with a friend in crisis.  I rushed around pulling the backup corded phone out of the box of assorted electronic shit I keep and installed that as fast as I could only to recall why i stopped using it in the first place - it has so much static it obscured the other person on the line.  I couldn't even hear my voicemail.  So today I bought a new corded phone and junked all three other phones (the third being a 9Mhz cordless I bought that just never worked ever).  The new phone is a refurb from Saskatoon and it has sasktel written on it.  I like Saskatchewan, it reminds me of a friend named Lori who moved to BC (but who was from Saskatchewan).  It's where Canada gets its communism.

Yesterday my doctor went over the results of my last physical.  My bad cholesterol is too high and the good stuff is too low.  I think it's related to my consumption of junk food, since I haven't eaten meat or dairy in almost a year (it'll be a year at the end of August).  I'm trying to go tweo weeks without eating any junkfood.  This will be a challenge for me, since junk is my heroin.  Today I did a lot of walking and drinking of soy smoothies.  I'm filling in with some cat feeding while a friend is away on her wedding/honeymoon.  I admit, I'm always a little mystified by weddings.  My own was such a DIY affair, and I thin k that's the kind I'm most comfortable with.  But then it fits in with my also being a control freak.  if I'd been paying caterers and other professionals I could easily have become bridezilla.

I'm trying to sell off the Ikea shelf inserts I bought that never fit.  The prospective buyer is an hour late.  This does not bode well.

Also, thanks to [info]moominmolly, I also have the most awesome commuter mug I could ever have or imagine.  My cup, as it were, runneth over.  Yay for everybody!

Jul. 9th, 2009 @ 05:33 pm Rowley Update
I've been scared to post this for fear I'll jinx it, but Rowley has made an unexpected and remarkable comeback from the sickness that I thought was going to end his life.

When I left the house Tuesday for, he was still heart-breakingly weak and lethargic and would eat. It had been about 5 days since he'd eaten, maybe 6. Walking home that evening, my heart was heavy and I was emotionally prepared to find him dead. Sad as I was, I needed food myself, and I stopped at White Hen and got a ham sandwich. I figured I'd be too busy crying to eat it, though.

When I got to the door, I was greeted by both cats. Rowley was up and walking, looking lucid for the first time in days. I ushered them both into the kitchen, and through the bag he smelled my sandwich and began caterwauling for it! He wanted food! I literally leapt for joy. He was pawing at the sandwich, demanding some as I ripped off the wrapper and pulled most of the meat out of the sandwich and tore it up for him. He dove in! He was eating so voraciously that he was sort of purr-grunting as he scarfed. BenBen joined the feast.

It's been like that yesterday and today. He wants food, food, food, and he's drinking water again. He's his old vocal self, and though it seems he now has trouble staying focused on whatever he's doing and is skinny as a rail, that's part of being elderly. He can have all the ham and tuna he can gobble down, and I'm so happy that it looks like I'm not going to loose him quite yet.

My [info]beowabbit has been so incredibly helpful and supportive, helping me give Rowley sub-cutaneous fluids (nay, doing it for me, basically), picking up supplies at Angell Memorial, loving the cats and being my heart's comfort. Not a day goes by that I don't feel immeasurable gratitude to him.

Jul. 9th, 2009 @ 08:27 am Whose house?!
A recent Cochrane review reports that aggressive treatment of blood pressure to reach a target of less than 140/90 is not justified by improvements in any morbidity and mortality outcome.

Which is what I told my doctor when she advised me to treat my blood pressure (which is almost exactly 140/90, usually). I had looked at the science and wasn't convinced. I did follow her advice to cut down on salt and get more exercise (well, a bit more exercise; if the weather would start cooperating, it would be a lot more than I'm getting now), but I wasn't taking drugs.

Win!
